What Does The Cross Represent?
People's Viewpoint…
1.) To many - The cross is foolishness. (1 Cor. 1:18)
2.) To many - The cross is offensive and makes enemies. (Gal. 5:11; Phil 3:18)
3.) To others - The cross is an idol. (Lev. 26:1; Acts 17:29; 1 Cor. 10:14)
God's Viewpoint…
1.) God's hatred of sin.
- Sin separates men from God. (Ezek. 18:20; Isa. 59: 1-2)
- The penalty for sin is death. (Rom. 3:23; 6:23; Heb. 9:22; 10:4; Lk. 22:42)
- Jesus died for our sins. (1 Pet. 2:21-24; Heb. 2:9; Jn. 1:29; 1 Jn. 2:1-2)
2.) God's love for mankind.
- God's love is seen from the beginning. (Gen3:15; 2 Tim. 1:9; Rev. 13:8)
- God's love is seen in the Old Testament. (Isa. 53:1-12)
- Fulfilled in Christ. (Rom. 5:6; Jn.3:16; 15:13; 1 Jn. 4:9-10)
3.) The end of the Old Law.
- The First Covenant was temporary. (Gal. 3:19-25; Heb. 8:7-13; 9:15-17)
- Jesus fulfilled the Old Law. (Matthew 5:17-20; Lk. 24:44-46; Acts 3:18)
- The Old Law was nailed to the cross. (Eph. 2:14-16; Col. 2:14; Heb. 10:9)
4.) The end of racial and ethical barriers.
- Broke down the wall between Jew and Gentile.
- Jesus dies for everyone. (1 Jn. 2:1-2; Tit. 2:11-12)
- God is not a respecter of persons. (Acts 10:34-36; Rom. 2:11; I Pet. 1:17; 2 Thess. 1:7-9)
5.) The drawing power of the Gospel.
- The story of the cross is the foundation of the Gospel. (1 Cor. 2:1-4; 15:1-4)
- All those who are saved are drawn by the cross. (Jn. 12:23-32; 1 Cor. 1:18-21)
- Draws men to faithful obedience and service. (Lk. 9:23-26; 14:26-27; 2 Cor. 5:14)
