Brethren With Too Many "Relatives"
2 Timothy 3:13-17
"Relatives" as in the opposite of "Absolutes"; "Relativism".
The Truth of the Gospel Is Absolute Truth!
- Given by inspiration from the Absolute One. (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet 1:16-21)
- Given to make us sure of more things, not less.
? Timothy could be positive about his teaching. (2 Tim. 3:14-17; 1 Tim. 1:3)
? Luke wrote of things "most surely believed" and of "infallible truths". ( Luke 1:3-4; Acts 1:3)
? Paul did not believe that truth changed with places and circumstances. (Gal. 2:14; 1 Cor. 4:17, 7:17)
Truth of the Gospel Is Hindered By Brethren With Too Many Relatives…
- When the make no effort to apply truth stated in "relative" terms:
? "Long hair" (1 Cor. 11:14,15) - "How long is long?"
? "Modest apparel" (1 Tim. 2:9) - "When does an article of clothing become immodest?"
- When they change convictions relative to time, place and circumstances:
? Because they run into difficult "what if's" of application.
? Because they run into unpleasant and/or unacceptable consequences of application.
